Na-Me-Res Opens Affordable Housing 218 Carlton Street

I am pleased to announce that our ward has a new affordable housing property dedicated to marginalized Indigenous men at 218 Carlton Street, now known by the Anishnawbe name “Migize Pazaagwii Gamik” (Uplifting Place of the Bald Eagle).

Native Men’s Residence (Na-Me-Res) is now offering secure, safe and affordable housing for Indigenous men. During the official opening on July 22, I had the opportunity to visit some of the units and speak with a resident who expressed great joy at finally having a place to call home.

Previously used as office space, the property at 218 Carlton Street was acquired by the City through a section 37 Agreement with MOD Developments Inc. through the redevelopment of 55-61 Charles Street East. The building was fully renovated by MOD and then transferred to the City for use as permanent affordable rental housing.

The City of Toronto’s Identify ‘N Impact community grant helps promote youth engagement and community safety by providing up to $17K for youth-led (15-29) initiatives that help with violence prevention, mental health and well-being, skills development, arts and youth-friendly spaces. Applications are now open until September 15 at 12:00pm.

Biidaasige Park is Bigger, Better and more Beautiful!

Opened last year, Biidaasige Park is expanding with 10 more acres of public waterfront space at 238 Cherry Street on Ookwemin Minising. With new places to walk, cycle, paddle, gather, enjoy public art and take in skyline views, residents and visitors are invited to come celebrate during opening weekend on July 25 and 26.
