Councillor Update - July 2026

It has been a tremendously busy summer! Between Pride and FIFA on one end, the final Toronto and East York Community Council and City Council of the term later this month on the other, and the ongoing Church Street Pedestrianization Pilot, my team and I have been working hard to continue delivering results. Despite the stress, despite the heat, and especially despite the province’s ongoing work to make the City of Toronto miserable, for this final proper Councillor Update of the term, I want to provide positive vibes only.

The celebration on Church Street continues! The Church Street Pedestrianization has officially launched, with the Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and my team installed patios and more seating on Church Street post-Pride to make it an even better place to visit. The pedestrianization lasts until August 21, so come on out and experience The Village like never before, enjoy the beautiful weather, and help me advocate for more pedestrianization across the City and to make this pilot permanent!

There are a lot of great events this summer for you and your family to attend especially if you like movies! The Toronto Outdoor Picture Show is BACK in Corktown Commons and is playing films every Thursday. I’m also hosting a screening of Zootopia 2 with TCEU Local 416 in St. James Town on Saturday, July 18. Details for both of those are below. While not quite in Ward 13, I would be remiss by also not mentioning the screening of A Thing of Beauty: The Early Years of Toronto’s Old City Hall hosted by The Friends of Old City Hall here at (new) City Hall, and the College Park: After Hours concerts and movies that the Downtown Yonge BIA is hosting.

Speaking of BIAs, everyone is continuing to provide great programming! There are too many events to list, such as the I Heart Market Street events the Old Town Toronto BIA and St. Lawrence Market is hosting, the Around the World Popups the Cabbagetown BIA created that are on now. Don’t miss them! Our BIAs truly do tremendous work, so please support your local businesses that allow them to continue to make our main streets great!

Finally, Summerlicious is also back, and on until July 19! There’s plenty of local restaurants offering affordable three-course prix fixe menus. Visit the City’s website for a full list of participating restaurants.

Positive vibes end here! With the recent extreme heat, I want to remind everyone to check in on friends, neighbours, and loved ones who may be at greater risk this summer — especially seniors, people living alone, and those with health conditions affected by the heat. The City has a list of free cooling spaces, so please take advantage of that! Low income households with a heat-related health condition may also qualify for a free portable air conditioner if they apply before July 31. Please visit the City’s website for more information. Church Street Pedestrianization Public Survey

The City is doing a survey of the Church Street Pedestrianization Project that my office and the Church-Wellesley Village BIA is operating on Church Street between Wellesley Street East and Alexander Street until August 21. Your feedback will help inform the City's response to future street closures here and across the City. If your a resident who has been to Church Street, take the survey! And if you haven't yet been, come see what you're missing then take the survey! The survey closes September 7, 2026.

Identify ‘N Impact Youth Grants - Apply by September 15!

The City of Toronto’s Identify ‘N Impact community grant helps promote youth engagement and community safety by providing up to $17K for youth-led (15-29) initiatives that help with violence prevention, mental health and well-being, skills development, arts and youth-friendly spaces. Applications are now open until September 15 at 12:00pm.

Biidaasige Park is Bigger, Better and more Beautiful!

Opened last year, Biidaasige Park is expanding with 10 more acres of public waterfront space at 238 Cherry Street on Ookwemin Minising. With new places to walk, cycle, paddle, gather, enjoy public art and take in skyline views, residents and visitors are invited to come celebrate during opening weekend on July 25 and 26. See what’s happening this weekend and beyond, including free guided kayak tours, walking tours and art-making workshops.
