Councillor Update - May 2025

Spring is here and after the seesawing of temperatures in April, I hope we will all be able to enjoy some beautiful weather. Mother's Day is May 11, a time for some to celebrate their relationship with their mother(s), family and friends, for others to hold space to grieve. There are also many who have complicated relationships to their mother or children, and they too need love and support. I hope regardless of your situation, that the day can be one where you can focus on supporting yourself and the people important in your life.

This month is busting at the seems with exciting updates and initiatives in Toronto Centre. We couldn't fit everything into one email, so please also check out my website for all of the recent updates.

At our recent April City Council meeting, we adopted a comprehensive Congestion Management Plan to enhance safety and efficiency in your daily commutes. Key measures include expanding the "Don't Block the Box" initiative, growing our Traffic Agent Program, and advancing automated enforcement technologies.

In addition, after years of advocacy, we now have a City-Wide Dog Off-Leash Strategy, ensuring safe and enjoyable spaces for our furry friends. Thanks to your input, we've developed clear guidelines for new off-leash areas, enhanced enforcement, and tailored hours to respect neighbours.

Local planning is also a top priority. As we navigate provincial policies, join us for the TC Talks on May 6 at The 519, where our panel of experts will discuss building complete communities and preserving our cultural spaces.

Church Street Pedestrianization Public Survey

The City is doing a survey of the Church Street Pedestrianization Project that my office and the Church-Wellesley Village BIA is operating on Church Street between Wellesley Street East and Alexander Street until August 21. Your feedback will help inform the City's response to future street closures here and across the City. If your a resident who has been to Church Street, take the survey! And if you haven't yet been, come see what you're missing then take the survey! The survey closes September 7, 2026.

Identify ‘N Impact Youth Grants - Apply by September 15!

The City of Toronto’s Identify ‘N Impact community grant helps promote youth engagement and community safety by providing up to $17K for youth-led (15-29) initiatives that help with violence prevention, mental health and well-being, skills development, arts and youth-friendly spaces. Applications are now open until September 15 at 12:00pm.

Biidaasige Park is Bigger, Better and more Beautiful!

Opened last year, Biidaasige Park is expanding with 10 more acres of public waterfront space at 238 Cherry Street on Ookwemin Minising. With new places to walk, cycle, paddle, gather, enjoy public art and take in skyline views, residents and visitors are invited to come celebrate during opening weekend on July 25 and 26. See what’s happening this weekend and beyond, including free guided kayak tours, walking tours and art-making workshops.
