Take Steps to Prevent Basement Flooding

Every house is at risk of basement flooding, even if it has not happened before. It’s essential that homeowners take steps to help protect their property.

What can homeowners do to help prevent basement flooding?

Homeowners should:

Ensure eavestroughs and downspouts are clear of debris and are working properly
If it is safe to do so, clear debris from roadside catch basins (the square sewer grates on the road) to help rain enter the storm sewer
Seal cracks or openings in your home’s walls, floors, windows and foundations
Ensure the grading around your home slopes away from the home’s windows and foundation walls
Disconnect your home’s downspout or hire someone to do it and ensure water discharges away from home’s foundation to a lawn, garden or rain barrel

Applications are now open until September 15 at 12:00pm.
